Starcraft 2 Terran Mech Units
Starcraft 2 Terran Units and Structures --->
Terran Mech (you are here)
In this section, I will be covering the Starcraft 2 Terran Mech units. Below you will find information on
abilities,
Note that this section will focus on the Siege Tank, Hellion, and Thor. These Starcraft 2 Terran mech units
have so many great uses that they need their own section!
Hellion
Cost: 100 minerals, 2 supplies
Requires: Factory
The Hellion is a very underused but powerful Terran unit. One of the differences between low-ranking and
high-ranking Terran 1v1 players is the use of this unit.
Most Terran players simply do not bother to get this unit and it is a big mistake. This unit is very effective
versus light units, particularly when used in groups.
The Hellion does extra damage to light units (though its attack is weak overall) and has the unusual ability of
attacking in a straight line (hitting all targets that fall within that line). The Hellion is also by default the
fastest Starcraft 2 Terran mech unit and one of the fastest units in game.
As a result, what you do with the Hellion is to run away from units, stopping to attack on occasion. Units often
end up chasing you in a straight line, so you will hit all the enemy's units that fall within its damage area.
The Pre-Igniter upgrade (150 minerals, 150 vespene gas) gives them significant bonus damage (+10)
versus light units. Combined with their natural bonus damage versus light units, Hellions tear through Zerglings
and Hydralisks.
As a result, Hellions are extremely effective versus Zerg players in the early game. Later in the game, they
help protect Thors and Siege tanks from Zerglings and Zealots.
Despite this, most players do not end up getting them. Most players are also not in the Diamond league! The
Hellion is the Starcraft 2 Terran Mech unit most underrated by low-ranking players.
With that said, Hellions are rather weak versus other Terran players though and should only be used
situationally.
Siege Tank
Cost: 150 minerals, 125 vespene gas, 2 supplies
Requires: Factory with Tech Lab attached
The Siege Tank is by far the most feared and probably the "best" Terran unit. The Siege Tank is the one
Starcraft 2 Terran mech unit that defines the Terran race.
With the Siege Tech technology (100 minerals, 100 vespene gas; researchable at the Tech Lab hooked to the
Factory), Siege Tanks can enter "Siege Mode". While in Siege mode, tanks do an incredibly amount of damage (60)
that "splashes" onto nearby units.
In small groups (3-4 seems to be the critical mass), Siege Tanks can take out units from a very far range (13!),
making it near impossible for the enemy's ground units to get close enough to attack.
Due to the splash damage, a group of Siege tanks will literally explode masses of Hydralisks, Stalkers, Marines,
Zealots, or any unit really that attempts to get close.
Siege Tanks can be used to set up outside the enemy's base or protect your own base from nearly any attack. The
downside to these units is that they are unable to attack air units and move very slowly. As a result, they cannot
be used alone.
Thors and Vikings provide the support they need versus air units. Marines are also a cheap unit that can act as
a human shield to prevent Siege Tank damage.
Thor
Cost: 300 minerals, 200 vespene gas, 6 supplies
Requires: Factory with Tech Lab attached; Armory
The Thor is the "ultimate" Terran mech unit. Added in Starcraft 2, this unit gives the Terran race the
massive firepower they were missing in the original Starcraft.
The Thor alone is actually not very good. It is susceptible in particular to masses of light units like
Zerglings and Zealots.
However, it is very synergistic with other Terran mech units. Once Thors reach a critical mass (about 6), they
become practically immune to Air units. Thors are like the Siege Tanks of the air in that they also deal splash
damage at a high range to air units.
Due to all the splash damage, a pack of Thors is able to rip through nearly any amount of air units,
particularly light ones (like Mutalisks). Alone, they are not very strong as they do not deal large amounts of
damage.
Thors high HP total also prevents them from being destroyed by "friendly fire" from your Siege Tanks.
The Thor can be upgraded to use the 250mm Strike Cannons ability. This channeled ability stuns the opponent and
deals 500 damage over 6 seconds. This is very effective versus large units like the Ultralisk or high-powered
targets like Infestors. The channeled effect unleashes a barrage of attacks, allowing it to be very effective
versus Immortals as well.
As a result, for Terran, a mech pack consisting of Thors (for air and massive ground units), Hellions (for
light units) and Tanks (for every ground unit) is unstoppable when played right.
Starcraft 2 Terran mech units are quite powerful indeed!
